Key Responsibilities

Participants in the Fire Fighter in Training Programme will be expected to carry out several important duties, including:

  • Applying SHE (Safety, Health, and Environment) best practices during all emergency management activities.
  • Performing tasks and responsibilities according to operational instructions and safety standards.
  • Participating in regular physical and technical training to ensure readiness for emergency situations.
  • Taking part in Key Performance Area (KPA) and Personal Development Plan (PDP) discussions to track progress and development.
  • Ensuring performance goals are achieved in line with programme requirements.
  • Working cooperatively with internal teams, supervisors, and other stakeholders.
  • Responding appropriately to emergency situations such as fires, accidents, and hazardous material incidents.
  • Conducting reconditioning and maintenance of firefighting and life-support equipment.
  • Servicing portable firefighting equipment across plants and buildings within the facility.
  • Identifying opportunities to improve emergency management systems and maintenance processes.
  • Making suggestions that enhance safety standards and service delivery.
  • Participating in housekeeping and safety improvement initiatives within operational areas.

Minimum Requirements

To qualify for the Fire Fighter in Training Programme, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Grade 12 (Matric) with Mathematics, or an equivalent qualification.
  • Must be medically fit according to the required firefighting fitness assessments.
  • 0–5 years of relevant experience in emergency response, safety, or a related field.

Advantageous Certifications

While not mandatory, the following certifications will be considered beneficial:

  • Fire Fighter 1 & 2 (NFPA 1001) certification.
  • HPCSA-registered Basic Ambulance Assistant (BAA/BLS) or First Aid Level 3.
  • HPCSA-registered Intermediate Life Support (ILS) certification.
  • Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations certification (NFPA 1072/472).

These certifications can improve a candidate’s chances of selection and placement within the firefighting career path.

Important Note

Candidates selected for the programme will be placed in specific firefighting ranks depending on their experience, completed certifications, and the requirements outlined in Sasol’s Emergency Management career path and internal policies.
