Position Purpose
The purpose of this role is to assist the Train Driver in the safe and efficient operation of all types of trains and locomotive consists, including:
- Airbrake trains
- Vacuum trains
- High speed trains
- Heavy haul trains
- Passenger trains
This ensures freight/cargo reaches its destination on time, safely, and in good condition, supporting customer satisfaction and service reliability.
Key Duties and Responsibilities (Position Outputs)
1. Sign On Duty and Prepare for Shift
- Report at the designated workplace and receive allocated duties
- Determine which locomotive must be prepared
- Collect and place required equipment on the locomotive
- Check and supplement prescribed equipment
- Clean the working area
- Assist with locomotive start-up procedures
- Assist with locomotive brake tests
- Couple the locomotive
- Dispatch the locomotive as instructed
2. Locomotive Preparation
- Prepare the allocated locomotive(s) as required
- Assist with electrical and diesel locomotive preparations
- Conduct brake tests in line with operating procedures
3. Prepare Communication Equipment
- Collect radios/handsets/walkie-talkies/telemeters (where applicable)
- Test communication equipment to confirm functionality
4. Pre-Trip Train Preparation (Roadworthiness & Safety Compliance)
Perform pre-trip inspections and preparation for both locomotive and full train to comply with train working rules and safety standards.
Key tasks include:
- Attach/detach vehicles according to works order (when guard personnel are not available)
- Mount telemeters when required
- Complete the vehicle list and vacuum form
- Mount train indicators
- Examine the train
- Conduct brake tests in conjunction with the Train Driver
5. Shunting Operations (Sidings and Enroute)
- Obtain works orders
- Perform shunting activities: placing/removing trucks according to instructions
- Update vehicle lists
- Place and clear loaded/empty trucks at sidings
6. Assist Train Driver Enroute
Support safe movement of the train from the starting point to destination without damage or delays.
Duties include:
- Verbally compare signal positions with the Train Driver
- Observe proceeding trains and patrol locomotives
- Reset locomotive trip-outs
- Monitor safe running of the train
- Protect the train during incidents
- Assist during emergencies
7. Safety Compliance
- Follow safety standards and laid-down instructions at all times
- Ensure compliance with Transnet safety culture and operational procedures
8. Incident Reporting and Feedback
- Provide accurate and timely feedback to the Train Driver regarding incidents, risks, and route deviations
9. Administration Support
- Assist with various operational administration tasks as required
10. Train Journal Completion
- Complete the Train Journal after every shift
- Submit the journal to the Section Manager at sign-off
- Ensure accurate salary processing and operational reporting
Qualifications and Experience Requirements
1. Educational Requirements
- Grade 12 (Matric) with:
- Pure Mathematics and/or
- Physical Science
2. Medical and Safety Requirements
Applicants must be willing to undergo:
- Periodic medical surveillance
- Safety behavioural risk assessments during selection and every 12 months
- Fitness checks including:
- Hearing
- Vision
- Mental fitness
- Physical fitness
3. Minimum Trainee Prerequisites
- Minimum height: 1.6 metres
- Psychomotor ability assessment (Vienna Testing System – VTS standards)
- Ability to carry heavy objects
4. Functional Training Requirements
Candidates must be prepared to:
- Complete Train Assistant training (theoretical and practical)
- Obtain and pass a Train Assistant Duties Certificate
- Work independently once certified
5. Age Requirement (Safety Standard)
- Employees younger than 21 years are not allowed to undertake Train Driver or Train Control duties
(SANS 3000, paragraph 6.2.6.8)
