Thamini Uhai, formerly known as the World Lung Foundation, is a Tanzanian non-governmental organization dedicated to improving maternal and newborn health outcomes. Since 2008, the organization has partnered with the Government of Tanzania to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality while strengthening health systems—especially in underserved rural areas.
Over the years, Thamini Uhai has worked closely with global partners such as Bloomberg Philanthropies to expand access to quality Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (EmONC). The organization has also played a significant role in piloting and scaling birth companionship as a key component of respectful maternity care across multiple regions, including Kigoma, Katavi, Geita, and Mwanza.
Partnership Program: Mjamzito na Mtoto Salama
Thamini Uhai is currently implementing a major initiative titled “Mjamzito na Mtoto Salama”, a comprehensive maternal and newborn health improvement program in Tanzania. This five-year program is supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies and the Gates Foundation and will be implemented in two phases:
- Phase 1: September 2025 – June 2027
- Phase 2: July 2027 – June 2030

The program aims to accelerate progress toward the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by improving maternal and newborn health outcomes. It focuses on strengthening high-quality and respectful care, including antenatal services, postpartum hemorrhage (PPH) management, and specialized care for small and sick newborns.

1. Program Officer – Newborn Health (3 Positions)
Locations: Kigoma, Katavi, Geita
This role focuses on supporting the delivery of high-quality newborn care services across health facilities. The officer will work closely with government health teams to implement interventions such as essential newborn care, kangaroo mother care (KMC), and management of sick newborns.
Key Responsibilities:
- Support implementation of newborn health interventions
- Strengthen quality improvement systems and clinical practices
- Build capacity of healthcare workers
- Monitor program performance and support data-driven decision-making

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Medicine, Nursing, Midwifery, or related field

2. Program Officer – Maternal Health (2 Positions)
Locations: Katavi, Geita
The Program Officer will support maternal health interventions, ensuring delivery of respectful and high-quality services across antenatal, intrapartum, and postnatal care.
Key Responsibilities:
- Implement maternal health programs across facilities
- Strengthen clinical practices and quality improvement
- Support planning and coordination at regional and council levels

Qualifications:

- At least 5 years’ experience in RMNCAH

3. Advocacy and Communications Manager (1 Position)
Location: Dar es Salaam
This senior role leads advocacy strategies, partnerships, and communication initiatives to support program sustainability and visibility.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead advocacy campaigns and coalition building
- Coordinate development of annual reports and communication materials
- Manage stakeholder engagement with government and partners
- Oversee media relations and dissemination of program results
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Public Health, Law, Social Sciences, or related field
- Minimum 10 years of experience in advocacy and partnerships

4. Advocacy and Communication Officer (1 Position)
Location: Geita
The officer will support communication strategies, ensuring effective messaging, stakeholder engagement, and program visibility.

6. Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) Officer (1 Position)

The MEL Officer will support data collection, analysis, and reporting to strengthen decision-making and service delivery at facility and regional levels.
Key Responsibilities:
- Ensure accurate and timely data collection and reporting
- Support data quality assessments and validation
- Assist in performance monitoring and analysis
- Build capacity of health teams in data use
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Statistics, or related field
- At least 3 years of experience in M&E
- Experience with DHIS2 and HMIS systems
