The Sokoine University of Agriculture (SUA), through AB-Consult at the College of Economics and Business Studies (CoEBS), has announced exciting short-term fieldwork opportunities for qualified and motivated professionals in Tanzania. The vacancies are part of an important research project aimed at improving agricultural productivity among smallholder farmers.

The research project is being conducted in collaboration with international partners including the University of Illinois at Urbana‑Champaign, the University of Sussex, and OCP Tanzania. The study will focus on evaluating the impact of customized fertilizer recommendations based on plot-level soil testing on farmer investment, productivity, and profitability. The fieldwork will take place in selected villages across Mbeya, Njombe, and Iringa regions. Both Field Supervisors and Enumerators will play a critical role in ensuring accurate and high-quality data collection for this research initiative.


Field Supervisors Vacancy (5 Posts)

Position Details

  • Position: Field Supervisor
  • Number of Posts: 5
  • Contract Type: Short-term contract
  • Duration: Two months (Expected 18 March – 22 May 2026)
  • Locations: Mbeya, Njombe, and Iringa
  • Languages Required: Swahili and English

Position Overview

Field Supervisors will oversee enumerator teams conducting surveys and data collection among smallholder farmers. The project uses a cluster randomized controlled trial (RCT) approach to measure the effectiveness of tailored fertilizer recommendations derived from soil testing.

Supervisors will ensure that enumerators follow research protocols, maintain high standards of data quality, and support smooth field operations. In addition to supervising teams, supervisors may also conduct interviews and assist with additional surveys such as agro-dealer assessments.

Key Responsibilities

Field Supervisors will be responsible for:

  • Participating in training on survey tools, digital data collection platforms, and research protocols
  • Supervising enumerator teams during fieldwork
  • Conducting back-checks and spot-checks to ensure data accuracy
  • Monitoring enumerator performance through data quality dashboards
  • Providing feedback and coaching to enumerators
  • Coordinating the agro-dealer survey and verifying collected data
  • Conducting household or plot-level interviews when necessary
  • Reporting daily progress and field challenges to the research team
  • Ensuring proper informed consent procedures and confidentiality standards
  • Troubleshooting field challenges and ensuring smooth data collection operations

  • A Master’s degree will be an added advantage

  • At least three years of experience in quantitative or qualitative data collection
  • Strong understanding of community dynamics
  • Experience using tablets for digital data collection
  • Basic interviewing and survey administration skills

Enumerators Vacancy (15 Posts)

Position Details

  • Duration: Two months (Expected 18 March – 22 May 2026)
  • Locations: Mbeya, Njombe, and Iringa
  • Languages Required: Swahili and English

Position Overview

Enumerators will support the research team by conducting face-to-face interviews with farmers and collecting survey data at household and plot levels. They will play an important role in gathering information related to fertilizer use, agricultural inputs, agro-dealer stock availability, and farmer experiences.

Enumerators will work closely with Field Supervisors to ensure data is collected accurately and according to the established research protocols.

Key Responsibilities

Enumerators will perform the following duties:

  • Attend training on survey instruments and digital data collection tools
  • Participate in pre-testing survey questionnaires
  • Clearly explain the research to participants and obtain informed consent
  • Conduct structured interviews with farmers
  • Accurately record responses using tablets or smartphones
  • Maintain high standards of data quality and consistency
  • Provide daily updates to Field Supervisors
  • Assist in collecting feedback from participants when necessary
