HelpAge Tanzania (HAT), a national non-governmental organisation registered under the Non-Governmental Organisations Act of 2022 and compliant in Zanzibar under the Business Entities Registration Act No. 12 of 2012, is inviting applications for the position of Social Worker, Social Worker Vacancy at HelpAge Tanzania – February 2026.

The organisation works in partnership with Older People’s Forums, Organisations of Persons with Disabilities (OPDs), government institutions, UN agencies, humanitarian and development partners across Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar.

Duty Station: Kigoma Region – Kibondo Field Office (Nduta and Nyarugusu Refugee Camps and Host Communities)

Job Purpose

The Social Worker will play a critical role in identifying, managing cases, and protecting Persons with Specific Needs (PSNs), including older people, persons with disabilities, and their immediate family members in refugee camps and host communities. Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting routine home visits and providing psychosocial support.
  • Facilitating referrals and implementing community-based protection (CBP) mechanisms that strengthen family, peer, and community support systems.
  • Managing GBV (Gender-Based Violence) cases, following survivor-centered principles, inter-agency GBV standards, and national referral pathways.
  • Integrating GBV prevention and response within wider CBP structures and community accountability systems.
  • Carrying out duties either from the office or through mobile outreach initiatives.

The role focuses on improving protection outcomes, dignity, and overall wellbeing for vulnerable populations.

Personal Specifications

Essential Qualifications & Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Social Work, Community Development, Sociology, Community Psychology, or a related field.
  • Minimum of two years’ experience in social work, protection, GBV response, or health programming.
  • Demonstrated experience in GBV case management.
  • Strong understanding of protection principles, human rights, and humanitarian standards, including community-based protection approaches.
  • Ability to prepare clear and accurate reports.
  • Basic computer skills, including MS Word and Excel.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team and with diverse communities.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Desirable Qualifications & Skills:

  • Experience working with refugee or displacement-affected populations.
  • Ability to speak Kirundi and/or French.
