About the Role
The Teaching Assistant will work under the direction of the lead classroom teacher to support pupils and contribute to the effective functioning of the school.
The role involves assisting with learning activities, classroom organisation, pupil welfare, supervision and administrative tasks. The successful candidate should be enthusiastic about working with young people and willing to contribute to scheduled classes, activities, duties and boarding responsibilities when required.
Teaching Assistants are also expected to contribute to the school’s mission, vision, values and policies while maintaining constructive relationships with teachers, students, administrators, parents and the wider school community.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Support for pupils
The PE Teaching Assistant will be responsible for supporting pupils in their learning and development by:
- Motivating and stimulating children’s learning through practical experiences.
- Explaining instructions and assisting pupils when necessary.
- Supporting children’s personal, social and language development.
- Supporting the development of physical coordination, speech and communication skills.
- Encouraging mathematical and creative development through appropriate activities.
- Developing pupils’ curiosity and knowledge.
- Supporting pupils who are learning an additional language.
- Understanding individual pupils’ social and emotional needs.
- Maintaining pupils’ health, safety and welfare during lessons.
- Teaching a small number of lessons when required.
Support for teachers
The successful candidate will also assist teachers with classroom and learning activities, including:
- Preparing visual aids and teaching resources.
- Organising learning materials and resources.
- Preparing lesson materials.
- Supporting individual pupils and groups of pupils.
- Providing regular feedback to teachers on pupil progress.
- Contributing to pupil progress records.
- Monitoring and recording pupils’ achievement.
- Assisting with routine assessments and marking.
- Filing pupils’ worksheets.
- Preparing and covering books.
- Photocopying teaching materials when required.
Curriculum support
The Teaching Assistant may be required to teach a reasonable number of lessons in conjunction with the class teacher and participate in planning and evaluation.
Other responsibilities include supporting the use of ICT in classrooms and ICT laboratories, maintaining a respectful learning environment, keeping classrooms organised and ensuring teaching and learning resources are properly maintained.
Lunch hall responsibilities
The role also includes supporting pupils during lunch periods. Duties include organising pupil entry into the lunch hall, supervising handwashing and hygiene, encouraging appropriate table manners and eating habits, assisting younger pupils where necessary, and ensuring dining areas are left clean and tidy.
Playground and outdoor supervision
The Teaching Assistant will supervise pupils before school, during breaks and at lunchtime according to the school’s duty rota.
The role involves engaging pupils in activities that encourage healthy and active lifestyles, rotating activities, promoting inclusion and maintaining appropriate discipline. Accidents and illnesses must be reported to the appropriate senior staff member.
Boarding house duties
When assigned afternoon boarding duties, the Teaching Assistant will support primary boarders by ensuring they receive a snack and drink, supervising homework and organising suitable educational activities for pupils who finish their work early.
The successful candidate will also help maintain discipline and promote compliance with boarding house policies.
Other school responsibilities
The Teaching Assistant may also be required to:
- Display pupils’ work.
- Supervise pupils during outings and visits.
- Attend staff meetings.
- Listen and respond appropriately to pupils who raise concerns, in accordance with safeguarding procedures.
- Provide pastoral care and support.
- Build positive and trusting relationships with pupils.
- Maintain the health and safety of pupils and staff during activities.
- Perform other reasonable duties assigned by the teacher or Assistant Head.
Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should meet the following requirements:
- A high school qualification is essential.
- A post-high-school qualification such as a certificate, diploma or degree is desirable.
- At least two years’ experience working in a school is desirable.
- Fluency in English is essential.
