As part of the Spark Project, NEWL is recruiting Field Engineers to support diesel generator fuel tank verification, calibration, maintenance, and compliance activities at telecom passive network sites.

Job Summary

The Field Engineer will be responsible for verifying, calibrating, and documenting diesel generator (DG) fuel tanks installed at telecom passive network sites. The role also involves carrying out preventive and corrective maintenance on telecom power infrastructure while ensuring full compliance with company standards and Health, Safety, Environment, and Quality (SHEQ) requirements.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidates will be responsible for:

Tank Verification and Calibration

  • Conduct physical verification of diesel generator fuel tanks at assigned telecom sites.
  • Measure and confirm actual tank dimensions and fuel capacities.
  • Perform fuel tank calibration using approved standards and procedures.
  • Develop and validate calibration charts and tables.
  • Verify fuel level accuracy using calibration charts.
  • Inspect diesel generator fuel systems for leaks, corrosion, damage, and other abnormalities.
  • Record accurate site information, including:
    • Diesel generator serial numbers.
    • Tank types.
    • Tank configurations.
  • Capture clear geotagged photographs before and after calibration activities.
  • Prepare and submit calibration reports within required timelines.
  • Report discrepancies between actual and recorded fuel tank capacities.
  • Maintain high standards of data accuracy and integrity.
  • Escalate technical issues and project risks to the Line Manager.

Operations and Maintenance

  • Coordinate activities with:
    • Operations Team.
    • Network Operations Centre (NOC).
    • Site owners.
  • Safeguard calibration equipment and ensure proper handling.
  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on telecom power infrastructure.
  • Service diesel generators according to agreed Service Level Agreements (SLAs).

Health, Safety, Environment and Quality (SHEQ)

The Field Engineer will also:

  • Comply with all SHEQ policies and procedures.
  • Report all near misses, hazards, and SHEQ non-conformities.
  • Report at least:
    • Five (5) near misses every month.
    • One (1) workplace hazard every month.
  • Conduct Field Level Risk Assessments (FLRA) before planned work.
  • Report accidents or property damage within 24 hours.
  • Wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Complete Journey Management Plans for trips exceeding:
    • 150 kilometres, or
    • 3 hours of driving.
  • Ensure proper waste disposal.
  • Conduct daily vehicle inspections.
  • Attend mandatory OSHA medical examinations.
  • Cooperate during SHEQ investigations involving workplace incidents.

Qualifications

Applicants should possess:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in:
    • Electrical Engineering,
    • Mechanical Engineering,
    • or another related technical discipline.

Experience Required

Candidates should have:

  • Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in telecom passive infrastructure operations.
  • Practical experience with:
    • Diesel generators.
    • Fuel systems.
    • Telecom site maintenance.

Technical Knowledge

Applicants should demonstrate knowledge of:

  • Telecom passive infrastructure.
  • Diesel Generators (DG).
  • Rectifiers.
  • Batteries.
  • Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS).
  • Telecom power systems.

Required Skills

The ideal candidate should possess:

  • Strong technical troubleshooting skills.
