KPMG East Africa, on behalf of its client, a leading not-for-profit organization in Tanzania’s health sector, is seeking an exceptional and visionary Executive Director to lead the organization into its next phase of growth, impact and sustainability.
The successful candidate will provide strategic and executive leadership while ensuring operational excellence, financial sustainability and effective implementation of the organization’s mission. The role also involves strengthening the organization’s position as a center of excellence in health programme implementation, policy advocacy, technical assistance, research, knowledge generation and capacity building.
About the Role
The Executive Director will work closely with the Board and Senior Management Team to translate strategic decisions into measurable organizational outcomes. The position requires an experienced leader with a strong understanding of Tanzania’s health systems, organizational governance, resource mobilization and health-sector development.
Additionally, the successful candidate will represent the organization nationally, regionally and internationally while developing strategic relationships with government institutions, donors, development partners, research institutions, philanthropies and other stakeholders.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide visionary leadership in implementing the organization’s Strategic Plan in alignment with national and global health priorities.
- Translate Board decisions into actionable strategies, annual operational plans and measurable performance outcomes.
- Strengthen technical excellence, institutional growth, innovation, policy influence and organizational transformation.
- Reinforce the organization’s position as a trusted national and regional provider of technical assistance.
- Provide executive oversight of organizational sustainability, financial performance and resource allocation.
- Ensure the organization’s long-term financial and operational viability.
- Develop a robust and diversified funding and programme portfolio through strategic partnerships, grants, investments and innovative income-generating initiatives.
- Promote financial prudence, accountability, transparency and sound risk management.
- Ensure effective business continuity and protection of organizational assets.
- Ensure quality financial information is available to support Executive Management and Board oversight.
- Provide strategic oversight of research and innovation programmes.
- Ensure research activities demonstrate quality, relevance and measurable public health impact.
- Drive institutional modernization through digital transformation and technology adoption.
- Support research commercialization and strategic capital and infrastructure development.
- Develop and maintain strategic partnerships with donors, governments, development partners, philanthropic institutions, private-sector organizations and funding agencies.
- Lead identification, pursuit and acquisition of new funding opportunities.
- Mobilize grants, contracts, endowments and innovative financing mechanisms.
- Diversify revenue streams and strategic partnerships to reduce funding concentration risks.
- Strengthen the organization’s financial resilience.
- Oversee development of compelling funding proposals, investment cases and partnership frameworks.
- Lead, inspire and develop the Senior Management Team.
- Build a motivated, capable and inclusive workforce.
- Promote learning, collaboration and performance excellence.
- Champion leadership development and succession planning.
- Promote fair, merit-based systems and staff wellbeing.
- Ensure compliance with governance frameworks, statutory obligations, standard operating procedures and organizational policies.

- Represent the organization nationally, regionally and internationally as its principal ambassador.
- Strengthen relationships with government, donors, development partners, academic and research institutions and philanthropic organizations.
- Position the organization as a trusted policy advisor and technical partner.
Qualifications and Requirements
Applicants should possess:
- A Master’s Degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Medicine, Life Sciences, Health Economics or a related discipline.
- A PhD will be an added advantage.
- At least 15 years of progressively responsible leadership experience.
- At least five years of executive-level experience.
- Experience leading complex organizations, such as health programmes, academic institutions, health research organizations or large health-related NGOs.
- Strong knowledge of organizational governance.
- Strong financial oversight and stewardship capabilities.
- Experience developing strategic partnerships.
- Ability to lead organizations through periods of public health and financial uncertainty.
- Strong understanding of Tanzania’s health systems.
