About the Role

The Inventory Accountant will be responsible for maintaining accurate inventory records and ensuring that inventories are properly valued, controlled and reported.

The role covers a wide range of inventory categories, including consumables, spare parts, fuel, reagents, ore stockpiles and gold-in-process. The successful candidate will work closely with Finance, Supply Chain, Warehouse, Maintenance, Mining and Processing teams to strengthen inventory controls and support effective cost management.

Key Responsibilities

Inventory Accounting and Valuation

The Inventory Accountant will:

  • Maintain accurate inventory records in the ERP system for warehouses and stock locations.
  • Apply appropriate inventory valuation methods, including weighted average cost and standard cost.
  • Calculate and post monthly inventory adjustments.
  • Account for stock movements, cost allocations, shrinkage and write-downs.
  • Prepare monthly inventory valuation reports.
  • Reconcile inventory sub-ledgers with general ledger balances.
  • Account for ore stockpiles, work-in-process and finished gold-in-process inventories in accordance with IAS 2 and applicable mining practices.

Reconciliation and Month-End Closing

Stocktakes and Internal Controls

The position will also involve:

  • Coordinating and participating in periodic stocktakes and cycle counts.
  • Developing stocktake procedures and counting instructions.
  • Investigating stock variances.
  • Reviewing and approving stock adjustments arising from physical counts.
  • Strengthening controls over receiving, storage, issuing, returns and write-offs.
  • Ensuring appropriate segregation of duties between warehouse, supply chain and finance functions.

Inventory Provisioning and Obsolescence

The Inventory Accountant will:

  • Monitor slow-moving, obsolete and excess inventory.
  • Prepare inventory ageing and turnover analyses.
  • Calculate and recommend provisions for obsolete, damaged or non-moving inventory.
  • Work with Supply Chain and user departments on stock rationalisation.
  • Support write-offs, disposals and inventory reduction initiatives.

Systems and Data Management

Key duties include:

  • Maintaining accurate inventory master data.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants should have:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Commerce or a related field.
  • A professional qualification such as CPA, ACCA or CIMA, or progress towards one, is preferred.
  • 3–5 years of accounting experience.
  • At least 2 years of experience in inventory or stock accounting.
  • Experience in a capital-intensive, manufacturing or similarly complex environment.
  • Experience in mining, particularly gold mining, oil and gas, manufacturing or heavy industry is strongly preferred.
  • Knowledge of IFRS, especially IAS 2 on inventories.
  • Knowledge of the Tanzanian tax and regulatory environment is an advantage.
  • Practical experience using ERP systems and inventory modules such as SAP, Pronto or Sage.
