The Government Communication and Information System (GCIS) has officially announced an exciting senior management career opportunity for qualified and experienced professionals in South Africa’s public communication sector. Important Application Notes

Salary: R1 813 182 per annum
(Level 15, all-inclusive package)

The salary package consists of:

  • 70% basic salary
  • 30% flexible benefits package

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must possess:

  • An appropriate Bachelor’s Degree (NQF Level 8) recognized by SAQA
  • Qualification in one of the following fields:
    • Communication
    • Development Communication
    • Public Relations
    • Media Studies
    • Journalism
    • Related communication fields

In addition, candidates must have:

  • At least 8 years of experience at senior management level
  • Extensive experience in the communication environment

A Nyukela Public Service SMS Pre-Entry Programme Certificate endorsed by the National School of Government (NSG) is mandatory.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

The appointed Deputy Director-General will report directly to the Director-General and will be responsible for:

  • Providing strategic leadership in government communication
  • Ensuring quality, consistency, and responsiveness of public information
  • Leading digital communication strategies
  • Coordinating communication platforms across government
  • Overseeing media buying, production, and marketing services
  • Conducting research to guide communication decisions
  • Strengthening communication across all official languages
  • Managing government corporate branding
  • Ensuring sound governance, risk compliance, and financial management
  • Supporting communication policy and legislative development

This is a highly influential executive role that directly impacts how government communicates with the public.
