Objective of the Role

The Engineer 3 – UG Mine Planning will develop options for the optimal development of the Gold Mine and produce underground mine schedules, production forecasts, and budgets that support the achievement of planned physical targets.

The role will support underground mining operations across multiple planning horizons, including:

  • Day-to-week planning.
  • 1–3 month planning.
  • 4–18 month planning.
  • 18 months through to Life of Mine planning.

The position will also contribute to operational execution, value optimisation, mine scheduling systems, and long-term strategic planning.

Key Responsibilities

Mine Planning and Scheduling

  • Contribute to systems within the Mine Planning section that deliver mine schedules for execution and maximise the value of the underground orebody.
  • Deliver accurate physical schedules for the underground mine under the direction of the Planning Superintendent.
  • Ensure mine schedules reflect the appropriate level of confidence in reserves and resources throughout the asset life.
  • Support the preparation and delivery of mining budgets and Life of Mine Plans.
  • Authorise and oversee the creation of mine physical schedules prepared by Planning Engineers.
  • Report performance against plan and identify, investigate, and rectify variances.

Mine Development and Optimisation

  • Undertake resource identification and evaluation to optimise the development potential of the Gold Mine.
  • Identify opportunities for significant improvements in mining productivity and cost efficiency.
  • Develop strategies to optimise the delivery of mine schedules and maximise underground orebody value.
  • Contribute to strategies for optimising mine plans, designs, and work packages.
  • Support the adoption of innovative equipment, technologies, and mining methods.
  • Analyse alternative mining methods, cutoff grades, mine designs, sequencing, infrastructure, and equipment requirements.
  • Assess the economics of mining and study areas against strategic objectives and recommend further optimisation or termination where appropriate.

Mine Planning Systems and Standards

  • Develop and improve systems that support effective work planning and safe and efficient work practices.
  • Create standards, procedures, and guidelines for activities performed by the planning department.
  • Ensure planning documentation is properly controlled and maintained.
  • Comply with all applicable standards, procedures, and guidelines within the Mine Scheduling Department.
  • Support the development of organisational capability within the Mine Technical Services Department.

Operational Excellence and Value Creation

  • Support Operational Excellence initiatives within the Mine Scheduling Department.
  • Identify opportunities to create additional value through improved planning and scheduling.
  • Track progress against planned schedules, targets, and expected outcomes.
  • Identify productivity, cost, technology, and work-method improvements.
  • Contribute to strategies that improve the efficiency and effectiveness of underground mining operations.

Risk Management and Safety

  • Proactively communicate threats to budget delivery, including grade, physical, and scheduling variances.
  • Develop plans to reduce or manage potential business impacts.
  • Implement formal risk assessment processes for monthly schedules and quarterly forecasts.
  • Actively incorporate safety considerations into mine designs, development sequencing, and underground infrastructure specifications.
  • Provide a safe working environment and comply with SHE&C plans, procedures, management systems, and processes.
  • Stop or escalate unsafe practices where necessary.

Stakeholder and Team Management

  • Develop and maintain constructive relationships with colleagues, business partners, contractors, consultants, and other stakeholders.
  • Work collaboratively to resolve operational and planning issues.
  • Apply appropriate management and people practices within the Mine Technical UG Department.
  • Identify development needs of direct reports and support their professional growth.

Life of Mine Planning

  • Prepare comprehensive handover packages for the Mine Planning team covering all relevant aspects of the Life of Mine Plan.
  • Ensure handover documentation includes strategic intent, mine design, infrastructure specifications, production schedules, financial models, risks, issues, and mitigation strategies.
  • Contribute to long-term strategies that support sustainable development of the underground operation.

Qualifications and Experience

Educational Qualifications

Applicants must possess:

  • A Degree in Mining Engineering or a relevant discipline.
  • Professional registration with the Engineers Registration Board (ERB).

Professional Experience

  • At least 7 years of operational experience in an underground mine.
  • Strong practical experience in underground mine planning, design, and scheduling.
  • Experience supporting mining operations, production planning, and Life of Mine activities.
