About the Dis-Chem Dispensary Support Learnership
The Dis-Chem Dispensary Support Learnership is designed for candidates interested in developing a career in the pharmacy and pharmaceutical environment. The programme aims to provide learners with the workplace experience and training required to complete the Basic Pharmacist Assistant learner course.
Successful candidates are initially employed on a fixed-term basis as Dispensary Support employees while they work towards registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) as learner basic pharmacist assistants. Learners who successfully complete and qualify as Basic Pharmacist Assistants may be considered for permanent employment, subject to the applicable requirements and opportunities available.
What You Will Learn
The learnership combines workplace-based training with practical experience in a dispensary environment. Learners will work under appropriate pharmacy supervision and gain exposure to areas such as medicine handling, stock control, customer service and prescription-related processes.
The programme is intended to help participants develop the practical knowledge and workplace skills needed to perform duties associated with the pharmacist assistant environment.
Dis-Chem Dispensary Support Responsibilities
Depending on the position and store, successful learners may be required to perform duties including:
- Assisting with the sale of Schedule 1 medicines or scheduled substances.
- Assisting with the preparation and compounding of non-sterile medicines according to approved formulas and Standard Operating Procedures.
- Unpacking and merchandising dispensary stock.
- Cleaning dispensary and over-the-counter shelves.
- Learning to interpret prescriptions accurately.
- Picking, packing and labelling medication accurately.
- Ensuring medication is checked and signed off by a pharmacist.
- Assisting with stock control for Schedule 1 to Schedule 5 medicines.
- Monitoring medicine expiry dates and maintaining proper shelf organisation.
- Following up with patients regarding prescription tracking and appointments.
- Assisting with patient service telephone calls.
- Providing health-related information to customers.
- Assisting with medical scheme authorisations for chronic, HIV/AIDS and oncology medication.
- Reporting low or out-of-stock items and stock discrepancies.
- Receiving dispensary stock according to company procedures.
- Performing other duties assigned by the Dispensary Manager.
Requirements for the Dis-Chem Learnership
Applicants should meet the following minimum requirements:
- Have Grade 12.
- Have completed Pure Mathematics.
- Have completed either Physical Science or Life Science.
- Have achieved an average of at least 50%.
