1. Livelihood Intern
Location: Tanga, Mtwara, Kilwa, and Dar es Salaam Seascapes
Reporting to: Livelihood Officer
Position Type: Internship (Full-Time)
Contract Duration: 6 months, renewable based on performance and project continuation
Job Purpose
The Livelihood Intern will support the implementation of AFO’s livelihood programs across coastal communities. The role acts as a critical link between program leadership, community facilitators, and local groups to ensure effective delivery of AFO’s CLEAR Model.
In addition to advancing sustainable livelihoods, the intern will coordinate marine conservation initiatives, ecosystem restoration, and fisheries co-management activities. The position integrates economic resilience with environmental stewardship, ensuring programs are community-driven and aligned with climate adaptation goals.
Qualifications and Competencies
- Bachelor’s degree in Natural Resource Management and Economics, Environmental Studies, Development Studies, Community Development, or related fields
- 1–2 years’ experience in community-based livelihoods, VSLAs, or conservation-linked economic initiatives
- Willingness to be based in seascapes with frequent travel to remote coastal communities
- Knowledge of project planning, monitoring, and evaluation
- Experience supervising field teams and coordinating stakeholders
- Strong report writing and communication skills in Kiswahili and English
- Proficiency in basic data collection tools (e.g. Kobo Toolbox, MS Office, Savix MIS) is an added advantage

2. Seascape Conservation Intern
Location: Mtwara, Tanga, Kilwa, and Dar es Salaam Seascapes
Reporting to: Seascape Conservation Officer
Position Type: Internship (Full-Time)
Contract Duration: 6 months, renewable based on performance and project continuation
Job Purpose
The Seascape Conservation Intern will support marine conservation and community livelihood initiatives across assigned seascapes. The role focuses on ecological restoration, monitoring, and fisheries co-management while ensuring conservation efforts are responsive to community needs.
Working closely with the Seascape Conservation Officer, Livelihood Officer, and Community Facilitators, the intern will help implement AFO’s integrated conservation-livelihood approach and serve as a key contact for conservation operations within the seascape.
Qualifications and Competencies
- Bachelor’s degree in Marine Sciences, Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries, Environmental Studies, Natural Resource Management, or related fields
- 1–2 years of experience in ecological conservation, fieldwork, or community-based programs
- Experience in community-based conservation and co-management
- Familiarity with marine ecosystems and participatory engagement approaches
- Strong interest in integrated conservation and livelihood models
- Willingness to be based in coastal seascapes
- Good report writing and communication skills in Kiswahili and English
- Ability to use GPS, Kobo Toolbox, and Excel is an advantage
- Strong commitment to teamwork, inclusivity, and environmental sustainability
3. Apiculture Extension Intern
Location: Mtwara Seascape (with coordination support to Dar es Salaam Seascape)
Reporting to: Seascape Officer
Position Type: Internship (Full-Time)
Contract Duration: 6 months, renewable based on performance and project continuation
Job Purpose
The Apiculture Extension Intern will support the design and implementation of AFO’s integrated apiculture and mangrove restoration initiatives. The role combines ecological conservation with enterprise development, promoting honey production as a sustainable livelihood that supports mangrove protection.
The intern will facilitate training, enterprise development, and market readiness for bee products while strengthening mangrove-positive business models through VSLAs and microfinance approaches. This position plays a vital role in linking conservation outcomes with economic empowerment in coastal communities.
Qualifications and Competencies
- Bachelor’s degree in Beekeeping Science and Technology, Agriculture, Environmental Studies, Community Development, or related fields
- 1–2 years’ experience in apiculture training or community-based livelihood programs
- Strong technical knowledge of hive management and honey production
- Experience delivering hands-on training to community groups, especially women and youth
- Familiarity with VSLAs, microfinance, and enterprise development models
- Ability to support business planning, budgeting, and market development
- Willingness to be based in Mtwara with travel to remote coastal communities
- Strong report writing and communication skills in Kiswahili and English
- Proficiency in basic data collection and reporting tools is an added advantage
