South African Local Government Association (SALGA) Internships 2026 / 2027

The South African Local Government Association (SALGA) has invited unemployed and suitably qualified graduates to apply for its Graduate Development Programme 2026/2027. The programme offers young professionals an opportunity to gain practical workplace experience, develop professional skills and contribute to programmes that support and strengthen local government in South Africa.

The programme runs for 12 months and will be based across different provinces and clusters. Successful graduates will receive a stipend of R6,500 per month. SALGA also states that it will not cover relocation costs for applicants who choose to apply outside their residential area.

Who Can Apply?

Applicants for the SALGA Graduate Development Programme must meet the following requirements:

Must be a South African citizen.
Must be an unemployed graduate.
Must not have previously participated in a similar graduate development programme.
Must hold a recognised qualification relevant to the advertised opportunity.

Municipal Health Opportunity

One of the listed national opportunities is Municipal Health under the Infrastructure Delivery & Spatial cluster. Applicants for this opportunity require a National Diploma or Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Health (NQF Level 6/7).

Stipend and Programme Duration

The SALGA Graduate Development Programme is a 12-month graduate development opportunity. Graduates will receive a monthly stipend of R6,500 while gaining practical experience and structured professional development.
Participants will have opportunities to apply their academic knowledge to real workplace challenges while gaining exposure to the local government sector, stakeholder engagements, mentoring and other learning opportunities.
