The Tanzania National Roads Agency has announced an exciting job opportunity for a qualified and experienced Highway Engineer to join its team in March 2026. TANROADS is a government agency responsible for the maintenance and development of trunk and regional roads across Mainland Tanzania, as well as managing axle load control operations through weighbridge systems.

This vacancy is based in the Kilimanjaro Region, under a major road infrastructure project aimed at upgrading the Same – Kisiwani – Mkomazi road (100.5 km) to bitumen standard. The successful candidate will specifically work on Lot 2: Ndungu – Mkomazi Section (36 km), contributing to improved transportation and connectivity in the region.

Entry Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Must be a Tanzanian citizen
  • Hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent from a recognized institution
  • Must be registered with the Engineers Registration Board (ERB) as a Professional Engineer with a valid practicing license
  • A postgraduate qualification in Highway Engineering will be an added advantage
  • At least 7 years of working experience in road construction design and/or supervision
  • Proven experience serving as a Highway Engineer or equivalent in at least two road/bridge projects of similar scale within the past 10 years
  • Strong proficiency in both Swahili and English (written and spoken)

Key Duties and Responsibilities

The Highway Engineer will play a vital role in ensuring the successful execution of the project. Core responsibilities include:

  • Supervising construction works to ensure compliance with contract conditions and technical specifications
  • Reviewing engineering designs and identifying any gaps or improvements during construction
  • Ensuring geometric design standards are properly followed based on site conditions and best practices
  • Inspecting completed works to confirm they meet required quality and safety standards
  • Preparing project schedules and control charts to track progress and performance
  • Measuring quantities of completed work accurately
  • Preparing and submitting progress reports, including cost updates, to the Resident Engineer
  • Performing any other duties assigned by the Project Manager
