MSF is currently inviting applications from qualified and motivated candidates to fill two full-time supervisory positions based in Liwale, Lindi Region. These roles are part of MSF’s continued efforts to strengthen healthcare delivery and patient support services in Tanzania.

1. Pharmacy Supervisor

Job Title: Pharmacy Supervisor
Location: Liwale, Lindi, Tanzania
Reporting To: Mission Pharmacy Manager
Employment Type: Full Time (100%)

Main Purpose of the Role

The Pharmacy Supervisor is responsible for ensuring the proper functioning of the pharmacy and overseeing pharmaceutical supply chain processes in accordance with MSF protocols, standards, and national regulations. The role aims to ensure efficient pharmacy operations and consistent availability of medicines and medical supplies.

Key Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Ensuring proper storage, stock management, and supply processes for drugs and medical materials in line with MSF standards.
  • Maintaining hygiene and security procedures, including pest and rodent control, to guarantee safe storage conditions.
  • Monitoring environmental conditions such as temperature, humidity, and light exposure to maintain drug quality.
  • Coordinating the reception, delivery, and documentation of international and local medical orders with the logistics department.
  • Updating stock records and informing management of shortages, overstocking, or upcoming expiry dates.
  • Supervising drug and medical supply orders to maintain efficient consumption within budget limits.
  • Overseeing the distribution of medicines to patients according to prescriptions and providing guidance on proper usage.
  • Supporting pharmacy supply to other MSF-supported facilities and ensuring effective cold chain management when required.
  • Supervising pharmacy staff in collaboration with the HR department, including recruitment, training, shift planning, and performance evaluation.
  • Recording stock movements and drug consumption using computerized systems such as Isystock and reporting unusual consumption patterns.

Context-Specific Responsibilities

  • Support pharmacy management practices at peripheral health facilities.
  • Ensure continuous availability of essential medicines and medical supplies.
  • Oversee forecasting, quantification, inventory control, and pharmaceutical reporting.
  • Conduct routine stock reviews to prevent stock-outs, expiries, and overstocking.
  • Facilitate redistribution of medicines between supported facilities when necessary.
  • Strengthen reporting accuracy and ensure timely submission of pharmacy orders.
  • Monitor dispensing practices and ensure patients receive proper counselling on medication use and side effects.
  • Enforce Good Storage Practices (GSP) and proper cold chain management.
  • Provide on-site mentorship and capacity building for pharmacy and nursing staff.
  • Support pharmacovigilance activities and reporting of adverse drug reactions.
  • Identify pharmacy-related service gaps affecting maternal and neonatal care.

Qualifications and Requirements

Education:

  • Diploma in Pharmacy (essential)

Experience:

  • At least one year of professional experience as a pharmacist.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English and Swahili

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Computer literacy (Word, Excel, Internet)

2. Patient Support Supervisor

Job Title: Patient Support Supervisor

Reporting To: Project Medical Referent
Employment Type: Full Time (100%)

Main Purpose of the Role

The Patient Support Supervisor will oversee the implementation of patient support activities in close collaboration with the Project Medical Referent. The role focuses on empowering patients to better manage their illness and treatment beyond the purely medical aspects of care, ensuring comprehensive support throughout the healthcare process.

Key Responsibilities

The selected candidate will:

  • Assist in assessing patient support needs and developing strategies aligned with changing medical contexts.
  • Develop and implement patient support tools such as counselling protocols, educational materials, and health promotion messages.
  • Monitor and evaluate the implementation of patient support activities according to MSF standards.
  • Ensure effective collaboration with project teams and external partners involved in patient support.
  • Supervise patient support staff and organize their daily work.
  • Work closely with HR to manage recruitment, training, evaluation, and development of staff.
  • Collect, analyze, and summarize reports on patient support activities.

Context-Specific Responsibilities

Patient Support and Access to Care

  • Support differentiated care models for stable patients in remote areas.
  • Coordinate patient support interventions including transport assistance, treatment literacy sessions, and nutritional support referrals.
  • Monitor defaulter tracing systems such as community-based follow-ups.

Community Linkages and Referral Systems

  • Strengthen referral systems between health facilities and community health structures.
  • Ensure proper implementation of referral criteria.
  • Coordinate with Ministry of Health counterparts to align patient support strategies with district priorities.

Quality Counselling and Patient Protection

  • Ensure culturally appropriate counselling that considers stigma, gender dynamics, and traditional beliefs.
  • Monitor proper documentation of counselling sessions and support interventions.
  • Identify and report protection risks such as gender-based violence, neglect, and stigma-related abuse.
  • Provide coaching to improve confidentiality and counselling quality.

Team Management and Supervision

  • Supervise counsellors, social workers, peer educators, and outreach workers.
  • Provide technical guidance and supportive supervision.

Data Monitoring and Reporting

  • Ensure consistent use of reporting tools such as patient support registers, counselling logbooks, and referral tracking forms.
  • Support monthly data reporting and monitoring.

Qualifications and Requirements

Education:

  • University degree in Psychology, Counselling, Social Sciences, Communication, Health Promotion, Educational Sciences, or Nursing

Experience:

  • Minimum 2 years of experience in NGO settings (preferred)
  • Experience supervising and training staff

Languages:

  • Fluency in English and Swahili

Skills and Knowledge:

  • Good knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel
