About Aga Khan Health Service, Tanzania

AKHST completed a major expansion of the Aga Khan Hospital in 2018 with the aim of improving healthcare services and infrastructure. The upgraded hospital is now an ultra-modern 170-bed facility designed to deliver high-quality medical care and function as a tertiary care, referral, and teaching hospital.

The Phase II development significantly expanded several key clinical programs, including:

  • Comprehensive cardiology services
  • Oncology care
  • Neurosciences
  • Orthopaedics and Trauma
  • Diagnostic Imaging
  • Critical Care
  • Women and Child Health services

The hospital is JCI accredited, meaning it meets international standards of quality and patient safety comparable to leading hospitals globally.

In addition, the hospital serves as a teaching site for Aga Khan University, offering postgraduate medical education programs leading to a Master of Medicine in areas such as:

  • Internal Medicine
  • Surgery
  • Obstetrics and Gynaecology
  • Paediatrics and Child Health

It is also an accredited internship training site for medical professionals. As part of its integrated healthcare approach, AKHST plans to establish 35 outreach health facilities across Tanzania. Currently, 26 outreach clinics are already operational and connected to the main hospital in Dar es Salaam.

Position: Nurse Manager – Operating Theatre

Position Summary

The Operating Theatre Nurse Manager is responsible for planning, supervising, and ensuring efficient utilization of the Operating Theatre services. The role focuses on maintaining high standards of patient care, ensuring safety, and supporting continuous improvement in surgical services.

The Nurse Manager will oversee both clinical and operational functions of the theatre, ensuring optimal patient outcomes while managing staff, resources, and systems effectively.

The position requires strong knowledge of nursing practice, leadership, management principles, productivity management, communication, and teaching methodologies.

The successful candidate will collaborate closely with surgeons and multidisciplinary teams to support patient care, while also providing physical and psychological support to patients and their families.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership and Supervision

  • Direct and coordinate nursing service activities in the Operating Theatre.
  • Provide daily clinical supervision, leadership, and support to both clinical and non-clinical staff.
  • Mentor, coach, and support nursing staff to improve professional performance.
  • Address staff performance issues and provide opportunities for improvement.

Quality and Patient Care

  • Ensure high standards of safe and continuous patient care in the Operating Theatre.
  • Monitor and enforce compliance with professional nursing standards and hospital policies.
  • Evaluate the quality of nursing care and implement improvements where necessary.
  • Promote patient safety and quality improvement initiatives.

Staff Development and Performance Management

  • Conduct staff performance appraisals and maintain appropriate documentation.
  • Facilitate ongoing training and education for nursing staff.
  • Serve as a resource person for staff and support professional development.

Resource and Inventory Management

  • Manage the inventory of medicines, narcotics, surgical instruments, and medical supplies.
  • Ensure the availability and proper maintenance of theatre equipment and instruments.
  • Oversee cost control and budget management for the designated unit.

Collaboration and Clinical Coordination

  • Work closely with surgeons and multidisciplinary teams to ensure effective surgical services.
  • Manage clinical requirements and surgeon practice needs within the theatre environment.
  • Participate in hospital committees and contribute to program planning for new initiatives.

Compliance and Governance

  • Ensure compliance with hospital policies, regulatory requirements, and professional standards.
  • Implement and monitor patient care protocols and guidelines.
  • Participate in accreditation processes and ensure systems meet required standards.

Monitoring and Reporting

  • Establish unit goals, objectives, and performance indicators.
  • Prepare quarterly or biannual performance reports.
  • Monitor trends in clinical indicators and implement corrective actions when needed.
  • Report clinical incidents and ensure lessons learned are implemented.

Continuous Improvement

  • Participate in audits and ensure recommendations are implemented.
  • Attend Mortality and Morbidity meetings and follow up on outcomes.
  • Support institutional initiatives focused on quality improvement and patient safety.

Education and Experience Requirements

Applicants must meet the following qualifications:

  • Minimum Diploma in Nursing from a recognized nursing college or school.
  • Current registration with the Tanzania Nursing and Midwifery Council (TNMC).
  • Valid Nursing License in the United Republic of Tanzania.
  • Minimum of 8 years of nursing experience, including at least 2 years in the Operating Theatre.
