As the university continues to expand its academic and administrative operations, it is creating new positions to match current institutional needs. SUMAIT is now inviting applications from suitably qualified, competent, and committed individuals to fill the following administrative vacancies based in Zanzibar, Tanzania.
1) University Imam and Student Affairs Officer (1 Post)
Job Location: Zanzibar, Tanzania
Reporting to: Registrar (Academics, Research and Student Affairs)
This position plays a key role in providing spiritual guidance and supporting student welfare and development across the university community. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring students and staff receive proper spiritual care, counselling, and guidance in line with Islamic values and the university’s mission.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
The University Imam and Student Affairs Officer will be expected to:
- Provide spiritual leadership and meet the religious needs of Muslim students and staff
- Offer counselling on moral values and ethical conduct to students and university employees
- Serve all campuses and colleges under SUMAIT
- Coordinate student welfare and student activities, including:
- Sports and games
- Entertainment and student organizations
- Student advisory services and career development
- Counselling services and personal development initiatives
- Provide oversight of the Student Council and act as Returning Officer during student elections
- Guide student clubs, societies, and professional groups
- Promote and strengthen moral values as reflected in the university’s vision and mission
- Perform any other responsibilities assigned by the Vice Chancellor or University Council
Qualifications Required
Applicants for this role must meet the following requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Islamic Studies, Shariah, Theology, or related discipline (Master’s degree is an added advantage)
- At least three (3) years of professional ministry and/or leadership experience in a university, college, or similar institution
- Strong Islamic background with demonstrated skills in preaching, worship leadership, Daawah, religious education, and programme development
- Strong knowledge of Qur’an, Hadith, Fiqh, and contemporary Islamic issues
- At least three (3) years of administrative experience, with two (2) years at the level of Administrative Officer or equivalent
- Certified by relevant religious and government authorities and affiliated with a recognized Islamic institution
- Strong ICT and communication skills
- Ability to work in a diverse, multicultural environment with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality
2) Tutor of Counselling Psychology (1 Post)
Duty Station: Abdulrahman Al-Sumait University (SUMAIT)
Reporting to: Director – Center of Professional Continuing Education
SUMAIT is also looking for a qualified Tutor of Counselling Psychology to support teaching and training at Diploma and Certificate level. This role is ideal for a professional who is passionate about vocational teaching, student mentorship, and professional development.
Roles and Responsibilities
The Tutor will be responsible for:
- Teaching Diploma and Certificate students
- Conducting tutorials and seminars
- Performing any other duties assigned by the supervisor
Skills and Qualifications
To qualify, applicants must have:
- Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Counselling Psychology, or a closely related field with a good GPA
- CBET certificate (highly encouraged)
- At least two (2) years of teaching experience in vocational training programmes
3) Personal Secretary to the Vice Chancellor (1 Post)
Job Type: Regular (Fixed Term – 1 Year, Not Renewable)
Reporting to: Vice Chancellor
Duty Station: SUMAIT Zanzibar
This is a senior secretariat position requiring high professionalism, strong organizational ability, and excellent communication skills. The Personal Secretary will provide confidential personal assistant services to the Vice Chancellor and support coordination of internal and external university activities.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
- Manage the Vice Chancellor’s daily schedules and commitments
- Coordinate appointments, meetings, and official engagements
- Prepare correspondence, documentation, and reports as requested
- Advise the Vice Chancellor on internal and external engagements
- Handle travel arrangements and logistics for the Vice Chancellor and deputies
- Respond efficiently to enquiries using initiative and discretion
- Research confidential and sensitive information for projects
- Assist in preparing international travel itineraries and arrangements
- Perform other duties assigned by the Vice Chancellor or senior university officers
Qualifications Required
Applicants must have:
- Degree in any discipline (BA or Public Administration preferred) from a recognized institution
- Minimum of 4–5 years proven experience in a similar role, preferably within academic institutions
- Strong drafting skills (an added advantage)
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Strong leadership qualities and attention to detail
- Ability to handle multiple tasks professionally and confidentially
4) System Administrator / ICT Database (1 Post)
Duty Station: SUMAIT Zanzibar
Administrative Reporting to: DVC Finance and Administration
Technical Reporting to: HoD, Department of Mathematics and Computer Science
Job Type: Administrative
This position is responsible for managing and securing the university’s ICT infrastructure, including servers, networks, databases, and key institutional systems such as ERP and learning management platforms. The role is critical to supporting academic, administrative, and research operations.
Required Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should have:
- Master’s degree in IT, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field (Bachelor’s degree accepted if highly qualified)
- Minimum five (5) years of proven systems administration experience (higher education experience preferred)
- Strongly preferred certifications such as:
- CCNA
- MCSA/MCSE
- CompTIA Server+ / Security+
- ITIL
- RHCE or equivalent
Technical Skills Required
The ideal candidate should demonstrate:
- Advanced skills in Windows Server and Linux systems
- Virtualization experience (VMware or Hyper-V)
- Strong networking knowledge (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, routing, switches, firewalls)
- Experience with monitoring tools such as Nagios, Zabbix, Cacti, or Grafana
- Familiarity with institutional platforms such as Moodle (LMS), Koha, ERP systems, and library systems
Major Responsibilities
The System Administrator/ICT Database will:
- Plan, configure, optimize, and maintain university servers and network infrastructure
- Monitor performance and ensure system uptime and service delivery standards
- Design and administer databases (MySQL, SQL, Oracle), including backup and recovery
- Implement ICT security measures such as patching, antivirus, firewalls, and access control
- Maintain disaster recovery and business continuity systems (onsite and offsite backups)
- Support university systems such as ERP, Moodle, Koha, DSpace and coordinate upgrades
- Liaise with vendors for licensing, procurement, and technical support
- Maintain ICT documentation, inventories, and technical reports
- Support ICT strategy, planning, and policy development
