The Tanzania-Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) is a statutory institution jointly owned by the Governments of the United Republic of Tanzania and the Republic of Zambia on a 50/50 shareholding basis. Established to manage and operate the vital rail link between the two countries, TAZARA has its registered Head Office in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and operates two Regional Administrative Centres located in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, and Mpika, Zambia.
In order to strengthen its technical capacity and ensure the continued safety, reliability, and efficiency of railway operations, TAZARA invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced nationals of Tanzania and Zambia to fill the position of Senior Civil Engineer (SCE).

Job Purpose
The Senior Civil Engineer will be responsible for planning, supervising, and coordinating the maintenance and rehabilitation of railway infrastructure. This includes permanent way, bridges, tunnels, utility buildings, feeder roads, water supply systems, and staff housing, with the aim of ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient railway operations in line with TAZARA’s objectives.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidates will be expected to:
- Receive and implement instructions from the Regional Civil Engineer regarding regional maintenance and repair works.
- Prepare regional maintenance and rehabilitation plans for permanent way, bridges, tunnels, sidings, and related infrastructure based on district submissions.
- Provide technical guidance and supervision to subordinate staff and contractors to ensure compliance with standard specifications and quality requirements.
- Monitor the implementation of approved maintenance and emergency repair plans within approved budgets and available material resources.
- Conduct joint periodic inspections with district teams to identify infrastructure defects and uphold quality maintenance standards.
- Prepare periodic technical reports on the condition of railway infrastructure to support management decision-making.
- Participate in investigations of railway service accidents and coordinate emergency response and restoration works.
- Initiate the preparation of Bills of Quantities (BoQs), work schedules, and budget estimates to support maintenance planning and prioritization.

- Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multidisciplinary environment.
Qualifications and Experience
Candidates must possess:
- Form IV or Form VI Certificate (Tanzania) or Grade 12 Certificate (Zambia);
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or an equivalent qualification from a recognized university;
- A minimum of five (5) years’ relevant working experience, preferably in railway operations or large infrastructure projects;
- Age between 32 and 50 years;
- Registration with the Engineers Registration Board (ERB) of Tanzania or Zambia;
- Any additional relevant qualification will be an added advantage.
