The Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy in Dar es Salaam has officially announced that applications are now open for the 2027–2028 cycle of the prestigious Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistantship Program (FLTA). This highly competitive international exchange program offers qualified Tanzanian graduates and early-career educators a unique opportunity to teach Kiswahili language and Tanzanian culture at universities and colleges in the United States.The program aims to promote cultural exchange, language learning, and mutual understanding between Tanzania and the United States.

Selected participants will spend nine months in the United States, where they will work as teaching assistants in Kiswahili language classes while also enrolling in courses to further develop their professional and academic skills.Interested candidates must submit their applications online through the official portal: https://apply.iie.org/flta2027 The application deadline is Friday, April 24, 2026, at 11:59 PM East Africa Time (EAT). About the Fulbright FLTA Program

The Fulbright Foreign Language Teaching Assistantship Program is designed to strengthen foreign language instruction in U.S. higher education institutions while providing young educators from around the world with valuable teaching experience and cultural exposure. During the program, fellows will assist in teaching Kiswahili language classes, organize cultural activities related to Tanzania, and engage with the campus community. Participants will also have the opportunity to take academic courses that enhance their teaching skills, cultural knowledge, and leadership abilities.

It is important to note that the FLTA program is a non-degree program and cannot be extended or renewed. Individuals who intend to pursue full degree studies in the United States should consider applying for other academic scholarship programs instead. All participants must return to their home country immediately after completing the nine-month program. Extension requests will not be supported under any circumstances. Additionally, the program has strict participation policies:

  • Dependents are not allowed to accompany fellows during the program.
  • Fellows will live in campus housing alongside other students.
  • Candidates who are pregnant and expect to give birth during the program period are not eligible to participate.

Ideal Applicant Profile

The FLTA program is looking for energetic, motivated, and culturally engaged individuals who are passionate about language education and cultural exchange. Ideal candidates should be early-career educators who are capable of performing the dual role of teaching assistant and student while living in a diverse academic environment in the United States.

Applicants should demonstrate:

  • A strong interest in teaching Kiswahili and sharing Tanzanian culture with American students.
  • Leadership potential and the ability to inspire students to learn.
  • A willingness to actively participate in campus life and community activities.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Creativity, independence, and the ability to work as part of a team.

Participants are expected to engage fully in the academic and social life of their host institutions and serve as cultural ambassadors for Tanzania.

Preference will be given to applicants who have little or no prior experience living in the United States. Candidates should also be flexible and willing to accept placements at smaller or ethnically diverse academic institutions across the United States. Upon completion of the program, Tanzanian fellows are expected to return home and contribute to national development by sharing the knowledge, experience, and skills gained during their time abroad.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria to be considered for the program:

  • Be a citizen of the United Republic of Tanzania and reside in Tanzania throughout the application and selection process.
  • Hold a bachelor’s degree by June 2026 with a strong academic record.
  • Demonstrate a genuine interest in teaching Kiswahili and Tanzanian culture to students in the United States.
  • Be proficient in English, demonstrated by one of the following minimum scores:
    • TOEFL (Paper-Based): 550
    • TOEFL (Internet-Based): 79–80
    • IELTS Overall Band Score: 6.0

Although TOEFL scores are required, applicants do not need to submit them at the time of the initial application. Applicants must also:

  • Be able to work creatively and independently while collaborating with faculty and students.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and a willingness to learn.
  • Be willing to live in either rural or urban communities in the United States.
  • Show maturity, professionalism, integrity, and reliability.
  • Not hold U.S. citizenship (dual citizens are not eligible).
  • Provide a letter of support from their employer if currently employed.
  • Submit a written commitment to return and reside in Tanzania for at least two years after completing the program.
